Season, snow and weather

Åre has a long winter season and a mountain climate that changes fast.

The ski season in Åre normally runs from December to early May, with the most reliable snow from January to April. Large parts of the system have snowmaking, which keeps conditions stable.

From May to November it is the summer and autumn season, with hiking and biking, and Åre Bike Park open during summer. Mountain weather can change within an hour, so bring layers, a windproof shell and rain gear in any season.

  1. 1.Winter: December to early May, best snow January–April.
  2. 2.Summer: May to November, hiking and biking.
  3. 3.Autumn: colours arrive in September, quieter and cheaper weeks.
  4. 4.Dress in layers – conditions shift quickly in the mountains.

Do you need a car in Åre?

No – but it changes how you move around, especially outside winter.

In winter the ski bus connects Björnen, Åre village and Duved, and a valid Åre SkiPass works as your ticket on lines 701–704. If you stay ski-in/ski-out you need no transport to reach the slopes.

During the summer season there is no ski bus. Regular regional buses and taxis run instead, with fewer departures. Many guests arrive by train, use the occasional taxi and shop for the whole stay on arrival.

  1. 1.Winter: ski bus 702 and 704 to Åre Björnen Centrum.
  2. 2.Your lift pass works as a bus ticket on lines 701–704.
  3. 3.Summer: regional buses and taxis – book taxis ahead.
  4. 4.Private parking is included at the lodge if you drive.

Where to stay – village, Björnen or Duved?

It comes down to nightlife versus quiet and the slope at your door.

Åre village has the shortest walk to restaurants, bars and shops, but also the most people and noise. Björnen is the family area on the eastern side of the system, with wide, calm slopes and ski-in/ski-out lodging. Duved and Tegefjäll lie west and are quieter, with their own lifts.

Falken Mountain Lodge is in Åre Björnen, about 7 km from Åre village – the slope outside the door and silence in the evening, with the village reachable by ski bus, car or taxi.

  1. 1.Åre village: nightlife and services, busiest.
  2. 2.Björnen: family slopes, ski-in/ski-out, quiet evenings.
  3. 3.Duved and Tegefjäll: quietest, own lifts, further from the village.
  4. 4.All areas are linked by the ski bus in winter.

What is there to do in summer and autumn?

Hiking, trail riding, lift-served downhill and long bright evenings.

Hiking trails start right in the Björnen area, and Åreskutan is the classic summit walk. Trail riding, XC and e-MTB work well across the valley, and Åre Bike Park offers lift-served downhill during summer.

Autumn is the calmest and most beautiful period: colour on the mountain, few people and good conditions for combining remote work with time outdoors.

  1. 1.Hiking: trails from Björnen, summit walk on Åreskutan.
  2. 2.Biking: trail riding, XC and e-MTB across the valley.
  3. 3.Downhill: Åre Bike Park during the summer season.
  4. 4.Autumn: colour, calm and good conditions for longer stays.
